If you were in downtown Ottawa yesterday, you had the pleasure of another freudian political display of military might, as the federal government decided that it was necessary and appropriate to have multiple bombers, jets and helicopters fly over the capital in commemoration of our armed insurgence into Libya - the roars of these beasts trumpeting the glamour of bombing the hell out of a far away country (alongside your closest ally, as they participate illegally). You see, nothing says liberty, democracy and freedom like having machines of war whiz over residential and commercial neighbourhoods at 500 feet.
Not to be outdone in the killing-civilians-in-their-home-country-deserves-a-parade department, a number of Afghan vets are annoyed that their adventures in death and destruction aren’t being similarly venerated. I could make a joke about the kind of parade that would be appropriate for faclitating torture, but this government seems so damned proud of any military atrocity it might commit that they’d probably do it. So instead, they’ve promised them their own celebratory flyover when the mission “ends” in the spring.
I always got tired of all the talk and Heritage Vignettes about how ‘Canada is a nation of peacekeepers’, but that sure was preferable to multiple celebrations per year of our aggressive military adventures.
On the plus side, it does give me an excuse to post this, which seems sadly on-point (NSFW):
